Creating value from research – a TAFTIE workshop
Research and innovation are key elements in the ambitious goals of making Europe the leading knowledge economy. The European countries, and EU, are increasing the public spending on research. Access to the knowledge generated by the public research base and its use by business lie at the heart of the European Research Area. Good innovation systems in Europe must create well functioning links between the research institutions and the enterprises.
Being of high risk and far from ready to be marketed, research results demand extra attention in order to be exploited commercially. Most countries acknowledge that few private investments are made into technologies which haven’t proved that they work, and even less that they have a market. The road to success is long and winding, and several governments have set up different schemes in order to make the path easier to walk. Granting money to proof of concept is one such scheme. Financing technology transfer offices at R&D institutions is another.
On 25th February TAFTIE organised a workshop to exchange best practice on funding schemes and means/instruments/incentives for technology transfer/commercialisation of R&D.
Some 20 people from 12 countries and 14 agencies attended the meeting that was hosted by the Research Council of Norway. SenterNovem provided the facilitator.
After a successful exchange of knowledge and experience, the group decided to use
LinkedIn to continue the discussion and exchange on tech transfer and related issues.
